Recipe

COOKING ON A BUDGET
One of our favorite recipes through the years is a spaghetti sauce recipe that we received from Ken's sister. We traveled to Illinois near Memorial Day Weekend and she was cooking this pot of spaghetti sauce. We liked it so well we were given the recipe.
It makes a big batch and it freezes well. I line up storage containers to hold enough for a meal and freeze them.
We decided to name this DD's Spaghetti Sauce.

DD's Spaghetti Sauce

1- 28 oz can tomatoes  I added an additional 14.5 oz can
1 -12 oz can of tomato paste
1-14.5 oz can of tomato sauce
1-13.25 oz can of sliced mushrooms
1-12 oz jar of chili sauce (optional)
1-24 oz jar of tomato ketchup
1 green pepper
3 large onions ( I used 2 LARGE)
1 clove garlic  ( I have garlic in the yard and used 2 onion like bulbs)
2-2-1/2 pounds ground beef (could also use turkey)
Bay leaves (I used 6) Be sure to fish them out when the sauce is done simmering.
1 teaspoon Basil
1 teaspoon Oregano
1/2 teaspoon Thyme
Brown the meat and the onions, garlic, and green pepper.

Drain meat and vegetables after browning. Add back to large pan and add the remaining ingredients. DO NOT DRAIN THE MUSHROOMS. Add water to the tomato containers and rinse and add to the pan.
Simmer all day. It will thicken as it simmers. This makes a large batch and I had to use another smaller pan to put some in to simmer.
REMOVE BAY LEAVES BEFORE FREEZING.
The Basil, Oregano and Thyme were not in the recipe DD gave us but I added them as my Better Homes and Gardens cookbook has a recipe similar to this.
Cool and freeze.
